New Google CEO

Google announced two big changes this week – it formed a new company called ‘Alphabet’ which will be the parent company of Google. Secondly, it announced a new CEO – 11 year Google veteran Sundar Pichai.

There are few interesting things to note here – Sundar Pichai , the new CEO, has vast experience and knowledge. He is credited for Google Chrome and the growth of Android, but he is not your typical CEO. He grew up outside the country in the southern part of India. He moved to the US as a masters student and has engineering and management degrees from top schools. He is considered a geek –  not an outspoken charismatic extroverted personality . In fact, he is known to have a think accent and uncharismatic stage presence. This is refreshing to see because it it shows that diversity is not always a deterrent and that there is a shift from the popular belief that you need to be type A personality to climb the corporate ladder.

The other interesting part of the change is that Google made the decision to name the parent company ‘Alphabet’ knowing well that they do not own the web domain – – it is owned by BMW. Instead the domain is and this company will led by Google’s co-founders Larry Paige and Sergey Brin. According to Larry Page they picked that name because, “Alphabet is a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search!”

This will house all the next generation projects like Google X, Self driving cars and other pet projects which could soon become mainstream. It will be interesting to watch if this move will continue to maintain Google’s place as one of the leaders in the world of consumer technology and innovation.
